Crowns

We take pride in offering a regal touch to your smile with our dental crown services. We craft crowns that not only restore the functionality and strength of your teeth but also enhance their aesthetic appeal. Our crowns are custom-designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, ensuring a healthy and stunning smile.

What are dental crowns?

These custom-made "caps" are individually tailored and positioned over a tooth to restore its original shape, size, strength, and aesthetics.

When a tooth sustains cracks, decay, or damage, a crown is a protective shield, preserving its structural integrity while rejuvenating its natural appearance and functionality. Crowns are carefully crafted to harmonise with your natural teeth in terms of colour, shape, and size, thus delivering a seamless and authentic appearance.

When are dental crowns used?

Crowns are used in a variety of situations, including:

  • Restoring a broken or worn down tooth
  • Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling when there isn't much tooth left.
  • Holding a dental bridge in place.
  • Covering misshapen or severely discoloured teeth.
  • Protecting a weak tooth from breaking.
  • Restoring a dental implant.
  • Enhancing cosmetic appearance.

What are the types of dental crowns?

Dental crowns come in different materials, each with its own advantages:

  • Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns: Ideal for front tooth restoration, they provide the best natural colour match and are suitable for people with metal allergies.
  • Resin Crowns: Less expensive than other types but wear down over time and are prone to fractures.

What does the dental crown procedure involve?

Getting a dental crown usually requires two visits to our Pretoria dental practice. The process involves:

  1. Initial Examination: Dr Msimanga will first examine and prepare the tooth, which might involve taking X-rays and making a mould of your mouth.
  2. Tooth Preparation: The tooth is filed down to make room for the crown. The tooth may be built up with a filling material if additional tooth structure is needed.
  3. Impression Making: An impression of the filed tooth and surrounding teeth is taken. This model is sent to a dental lab, where your crown will be made.
  4. Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is fitted while your permanent crown is being made.
  5. Permanent Crown Fitting: On your second visit, the temporary crown is taken out, and the permanent crown is adjusted and cemented into place.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Crowns offer several benefits, including:

  • Protecting a weak tooth from breaking.
  • Restoring an already broken tooth.
  • Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling.
  • Holding a dental bridge in place.
  • Improving the appearance, shape, and alignment of a tooth.

Maintenance and longevity of dental crowns

With proper care, dental crowns can last between 5 to 15 years. Achieving long-lasting results hinges on maintaining excellent oral hygiene practices. Brushing twice daily, daily flossing, and scheduling routine dental check-ups at Dental Bliss Clinic significantly extend your crown's lifespan. Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or other hard objects that could damage the crown.

Dr Msimanga is committed to providing crowns that restore functionality and add a touch of elegance to your smile. Embrace the royal treatment for your teeth, and let us help you achieve a smile that's truly fit for a king or queen!
